United Nations Ends Sanctions on Syrian President Prior to White House Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to a United States-backed measure removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his presidential meeting the following week.

He was appointed transitional president after leading a rebel offensive that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, ending thirteen long years of domestic strife.

The US representative UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a strong political signal" that recognised Syria was in "a different period" since Assad was deposed.

Previously, he faced global penalties while commanding the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. America delisted the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations in July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the sanctions, posting on social media: "The nation shows its gratitude to the United States and allied countries for their support the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week comes after US President Donald Trump remarked that Sharaa had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot to unify the country".

The pair met for the first time during May, during Trump's Riyadh trip during a visit to the region.

After that meeting, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction served as al-Qaeda's branch inside the country before he cut connections in 2016.

Previous US Visit

Monday's visit will not be the president's debut journey to America during this period. This past fall, he emerged as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to address the UN General Assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support toward Gaza's residents.
