From Solo Parent Vacation Nightmare to Pet-Sitting Bliss: One Parent's Journey
After my marriage concluded, I naively believed vacations as a single parent could be straightforward. I soon realized they proved often extremely expensive, or appeared exclusively designed for “conventional” families, or else were so cheap that I came home more knackered than before I started.
Initial Vacation Attempts
The initial endeavor, tenting with friends, was fine up until I had to pack up the tent. Four hours of wrestling with it under the sun afterward, I hated the outdoors. Next, an adventurous trip for solo-parent families. The abseiling and exploring caves were brilliant, but sleeping in a bunkbed wrecked my back. We tried a budget package in Tenerife, but the crowds of traditional families were overwhelming, and poolside conversations with other women died down because I wasn’t accompanied by a convenient partner for their own husbands to chat with. An excursion to Majorca alongside a pal and her children was wonderful, but the expense was staggering.
Finding Pet-Sitting
Later, the previous fall, a friend asked if we could look after her dogs within the county while she attended to a wedding. For one peaceful couple of days, we walked along the shore, and settled by the fire in the evening. That led to pet-sitting for her associate in the region, which also went well. Encouraged, I subscribed with an yearly £99 membership to join a pet-sitting platform, where, in exchange for looking after people’s pets, you stay in their homes without cost. Within a few days, I secured a ten-day pet-sit in Sussex, looking after a retriever named Buzz while the proprietors were abroad.
Each day's strolls gave us the opportunity to discover breathtaking nature spots.
It was our first sit for unknown individuals, but all anxiety vanished as soon as we arrived at the beautiful four-bedroom house and met the gentle Buzz, who lived for belly scratches. Our daily dog walks offered us the opportunity to venture into magnificent nature spots, and, once we came home, we were able to relax in the garden for important discussions about our favourite “Ghosts” characters from the BBC sitcom. We avoided any pricey overrated attractions to wander around – instead, we browsed bookstores, indulged to nail care, and went on paddling excursions. I experienced lighter and happier than ever in years, and noticed my bond with my daughter Polly deepen every day. I don’t afraid to admit that I cried from joy. Things felt possible again.
Could Pet-Sitting for You?
Pet-sitting isn’t suitable for all. Certain individuals want zero duties on holiday apart from selecting their upcoming beverage, aren’t into pets, or perhaps find it strange about staying in a someone else’s bedroom, clearing the dishwasher, and taking out the trash. But the gentle pace of ordinary life, with employment stripped out and fresh locations to investigate, is perfect for me.
It keeps me from descending into total inactivity, which makes me experience twitchy and oddly hollow. And, monetarily, pet-sitting is a life-saver for a solo mother. Ten days break in a similar-sized property in the same area we stayed would set me about £2,500 on Airbnb.
An Alternative Perspective
Regarding residing in a stranger’s home, I found it nourishing. Even though pet-sitting represents a transaction, it is equally an expression of trust among unfamiliar people and animals, that has unleashed the finest version of me – my calm, caring and balanced aspect, full of gratitude for the people and locations we encounter. I have lined up an additional four days off, caring for a whippet within verdant Surrey, and, next year, I hope to try pet-sitting abroad. Due to a touch of innovative planning, we are able to experience the world from the coziness of a home – it simply happens to be another person’s.
